If you love manga, you’re in the right place.
If you have no idea what manga is, you might also be in the right place.
I’ve spent most of my life in and around storytelling, both as a creator and as an industry professional. Yet manga was a pretty revolutionary thing circa 2016 when I first found it. My initiation series? Lone Wolf and Cub and One Piece. The broad spectrum between the two is being shortened, gradually, by my continued exposure to the medium.
Since then, I’ve been obsessed. But my professional experience demanded I do more than just enjoy manga on my own, so I took to Substack to obsess over the creative components of manga.
I want to share this obsession with you. I want to hear what you obsess over, in manga, comics, or in storytelling in general.
That’s why this is all free. I’m not here to make money, I’m here to explore storytelling in manga, from artistic design to character development, and share it with you, my dear future and/or present reader.
So let me drop this here right quick:
Now then, as to what you’ll find here.
Every Friday, I release a deep dive into a specific storytelling element in a specific series. For instance:
My Hero Academia: All For Contrasts
My Hero Academia might well have some of the best character dynamics in the game.
Wind Breaker: When You Need Backstories
Everyone has a backstory. Not everyone needs to tell theirs.
Every Tuesday, I release a shorter post, something like One Great Panel or One Great Character or interviews with mangaka or editors. For instance:
Two newsletters a week? I know, I’m mostly insane, but this is a labor of love. A passion project. I just love manga and storytelling so much that I want to keep exploring it. Both to aide me as a creative, and, hopefully, to help you as either a consumer, a creative, or both.
Also, if you want to start with pieces I’ve enjoyed the most, you can check out this survey of my faves from 2024:
