I’m glad you wrote about this, since I bounced pretty hard off the sound effects in vol 1. After reading this, I’m realizing it wasn’t the sound effects themselves but the graphic treatment of the translation. It’s the font I’m bouncing off of. Makes me wonder what the untranslated version looked like. But given the prevalence of sound in future volumes it makes sense why they translated it. Thanks for the analysis!
That's such an interesting perspective! I always liked the font of the sound affects because it felt so matter-of-fact to me. Like they weren't trying to embellish the sounds, but rather just be what they are. Which is why I love the train crossing sound affects so much, because of how they slip the "It's coming" into the boring 'clang' to really set it off. It all feels very intentional, is what I'm getting at, and I quite like it! Thank you for reading.
It's incredible how a manga can use sound so effectively, I feel like even now that we have the anime to compare it to, the manga is far better at using sounds to create an atmosphere
The wall-to-wall sound effects in this manga are part of why I fell in love with it! I could hear the chirring of insects in my head during outdoor scenes and it became eerie when they were absent from the page, too. Thank you for covering this!!
