I actually love the lazy character trope. As a general rule of thumb, I find that the more laidback a manga character is, the more capable they really are (Shunsui from Bleach,Shikamaru from Naruto). It's always fun when they stop holding back and actually put in some effort.

Interesting! The moment a character says "what a pain" I instantly hate them lol. I think it's just because I've seen it so much. But on the flip side, it does work really well for characters like Nagi, who dug himself into quite a hole with his early laziness and is now climbing his way back out of it as he develops, at least for my tastes.

Have you always liked lazy characters? I'm so interested in this, since I hate them so much, ha!

The way I see it, the lazy characters in anime are those who can afford to be lazy. The same way the loud and brash characters often get humbled quickly, lazy characters are often the most powerful or capable people in the series - they simply have nothing to prove. The moments when they actually step up and do something are often some of the coolest moments in the series for me.

That’s fair, and that’s definitely how Nagi is growing on me. May actually have worked in his favor, with him starting with such low expectations, it allows for more growth. He still has his lazy moments but they don’t feel as all-defining anymore.

Thanks for another great newsletter! You sold me on Frieren after outlining the premise, I love stories that deal with “the adventure after the adventure.” 😄

Thanks for reading! It’s such great framing for a fun story. And I just adore subtlety, especially in a medium that is so rarely subtle.
