LOTS to think about here! I love this piece. Have to admit that I'm guilty of not giving setting the attention it deserves, but I really love the idea of making it so integral to the story that it is the story, so I'll definitely have a think about how I can use it that way it in future. A story that uses setting in this way is Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast novels... have you read them? The place, Gormenghast, is really a character in its own right and it's probably my favourite setting of a story EVER.

Where are you reading the manga? it looks amazing! I want to read it too! And I can tell from the panels you've used that you're so right about the character design!

Thanks so much! I have not read Gormenghast but it sounds like I need to. I need more settings to study, and I'm so curious to see a prose novel that does setting well, because that's what I REALLY struggle with.

I'm reading it on the K Manga app, from Kodansha. It was a little buggy when it first launched, and it's not as user friendly as Shonen Jump or Viz, but it does the job. This may be one I buy the physical volumes of too though, the art is just too good. Maybe I'll trade in my JJK stack and start a new collection lol.

I recommend reading Gormenghast and seeing how you find it. It's one of those books I think people either fall in love with or really, really don't like, but I still think all writers should read it just to experience what Peake does with his setting, characters and most of all his writing... he has such a mastery of words and he's so gleeful in playing around with the usual expectations of what makes good writing. The whole thing is so wonderfully eccentric but in a genius and fun way.

Ah, bother... looked up the K Manga app and it's not available in the UK. I'll have to wait until they make it available over here *crying inside*

I hardly consider myself a master, but thanks nonetheless!
